Restorative Practice (RP) was fully introduced within our school in September 2019. All staff are fully trained to conduct restorative practice and senior and middle management are also trained to facilitate RP where necessary.
RP is a core part of our teacher-student relationship, engagement, behaviour management, and conflict resolution in North Monastery Secondary School.
Numerous national and international studies indicate RP helps to foster positive outcomes for all involved. It helps to reduce formal disciplinary proceedings; enhances peer communication and allows students to make informed decisions in decision-making and solutions to any issues that may arise during the school day.
Students who present with challenging behaviour are asked to consider the following questions and to respond appropriately:
- What happened?
- What were you thinking at the time?
- What have your thoughts been since?
- Who has been affected by what you did?
- In what way have you been affected?
- What do you think needs to happen next?
